Message from the Head of School
“Inspirational.”
“Moving.”
“Thought provoking.”
These are just a few of the sentiments that several students in our lower and middle school expressed to me after having participated in “The Midrash of Judaism through the Arts” hands-on seminars this past week. The interactive workshops were led by educators from Israel, visiting South Florida for seven days as part of the “Artists and Musician s for Israel” program through the Partnership 2000 (P2K) Teacher Exchange. Students in grades four and six had the amazing opportunity to be a part of this P2K educational journey. What an example of global education at its finest!
Educators form our Sister City in Israel – Kiryat Bialik – visited our school and took part in a variety of sessions focusing on the arts. Workshops also were conducted for our Israeli colleagues by Middle School Art Teacher Carol Routman and Director of Admissions Hilary Arenstein. Our fabulous chorus wowed the P2K team. Our staff rolled out the welcome mat. As I’ve said over and over again, what a week it was! I am bursting with pride, once again.
I often reflect upon the cohesive community that is DKJA, each part shining individually and glowing as a whole. As I kvell over the events of the past week’s activities, I like to say “Yishar Koach” (Well done! Keep it up!).
Shabbat Shalom,
Karen Feller
Head of School

Students Demonstrate Compassion for Mumbai Victims
How Can I Make the World A Better Place?
In response to the horrific terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India, DKJA students have embarked upon many endeavors to demonstrate their compassion for others. Fourth-grade students discussed mitzvot, and how they could participate in a collective effort of doing good deeds. Turning tragedy/darkness into light can be obtained by doing a good deed. Students were asked to commit to one mitzvah in memory of the Mumbai victims.
Special forms were distributed to students listing opportunities for committing mitzvot. Lighting Shabbat candles, giving Tzedakah, being kind to friends, honoring their father and mother, not speaking Lashon Hara (gossip), praying with Kavanah (with intent), and attending Friday night services or Shabbat services were among the options students could select.
The forms will be mailed to grieving families in Israel to let them know of the many Jewish students outside of Israel who will be engaging in this project in memory of their loved ones.
High School at DKJA students joined Rabbi Zalmon Bukiet of our local Chabad to honor Rabbi Gavriel Noah Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, who were killed in the attacks.
Shown here, putting on their tefillin, are Jeff Landau, Noah Miller, Josh Bank, Alex Zafran), Daniel Saslafsky, Lucas Silva, Tiago Silva and Robert Fritz.
Eighth-grade students in Mrs. Gurspan’s Judaic Studies class were presented with a video, http://dogood.aish.com, prepared by Chabad Lubavitch.

Lower School Highlights
Celebrating 18!
Staff, faculty, and administrators gathered to celebrate the 18th anniversary of Lower School Principal of Judaic Studies Yafa Levit (third from left) as an integral, invaluable part of DKJA. A beautiful sign-in board, handmade by DKJA parent Dr. Susie Khalil, was presented to Mrs. Levit, and then “autographed” by guests. Guests enjoyed cappuccino and dessert as they reminisced about the past 18 years at DKJA. Mazel Tov!
Derech Eretz Honors
Congratulations to Josh Satisky and Ben Goodman, Derech Eretz (Student of the Month) recipients for the months of October and November, respectively. Students are selected for this recognition based upon outstanding demonstrations of kindness to others, “going the extra mile,” and serving as role models to their peers.

Middle School Highlights
Middle School Honor Board Recipients for First Semester
The Honor Board was created in 2002 to honor model students who demonstrate hard work, positive leadership qualities and are all around good citizens. In addition, students must have a B-average or above and no referrals or detentions. A male and female student is chosen in each of the middle school grades by their team of teachers. As always, the recipients share a special lunch with the middle school principals, which took place on Friday, December 5, 2008. During this time, they have the opportunity to share their thoughts on all aspects of the middle school. Please stop by the display board across from the main office to read the personal bios of the recipients. Congratulations to our first semester honor board recipients. Front Row: Michael Abitbol, Lauren Rosenthal, Daniel Mantzoor, Isabel Rubin, and Brett Sheldon. Back Row: Middle School Principal Carol Kolsky, Sondra Eilen, Axl Vinograd, and Arianna Schonwald.
National Junior Honor Society Applications Due Thursday
Middle school students interested in applying for the National Junior Honor Society must have their applications to Mrs. Siegel no later than Thursday, December 18, 2008.
Students Wrap Gifts for Volunteers
Seven fifth-graders from Donna Klein Jewish Academy recently wrapped gifts for volunteers of Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service. The volunteers will be awarded the presents at a RRJFS recognition lunch on March 3, 2008.
“The kids get community service and gave us two hours of their time,” said Marcy Bezark, volunteer services director at RRJFS. “They wrapped notepads that say, ‘Volunteers: We Take Note of You.’ Having the gifts look so pretty and decorative really adds a lift to the event. The volunteers get a big kick out of opening their presents. We are grateful the kids could help.”
Shown at right: Sami Lev, Alissa Katz, Shir Azoulai, Rachel Friedman, Danielle Zuviv, Maya Azoulai, and Susan Kaminecki.
